Software Tools

You will want to install the following types of software tools to use while working in the software field.

• Text Editor - I suggest Notepad++.
• HTML Editor
• Text/File Splitter - I use GSplit.
  Sometimes text files (usually logs) are so large that an editor cannot open the file so you will want to split the file into smaller pieces.  Also use this to split any large binary file into smaller pieces that you can later build back to the original large binary file.
• FTP/SFTP Tools - I suggest Filezilla.

• Apache Products & Tools
  • Ant (Free Web Tutorials) - Apache Ant is a Java-based build tool.
  • Tomcat (Free Web Tutorials) - Apache Tomcat is an open source Web Application Server designed to serve out web pages, JSP (Java Server Pages) and run Java Servlets.
  • Struts (Free Web Tutorials) - Apache Struts is a free open-source framework for creating Java web applications that implement the MVC (Model View Controller) architecture.
• OOAD (Object Oriented Analysis and Design)
  • UML (Unified Modeling Language) - overview of UML and examples of UML Diagrams.  Also includes a tutorial to install a UML Tool called EcliplseUML and then create a UML2 diagram.
• Software Development Methodologies
  • Agile Methodology - including frameworks that implement the agile methodology (Scrum Framework, etc...)
