- Example from DOS Prompt if you have a web server running on your local if
MS IIS is installed. (Note: Very case sensity!) This example
will show you the contents of the file.

Modems
- Testing a Modem: (first determine the COM port)
- From DOS
Go to Command Line
c:\> echo ATZ > COM2 (Resets modem to default
values)
c:\> echo ATL3 > COM2 (Sets the speaker volume level)
c:\> echo ATH1 > COM2 (Should hear a dial tone - off hook)
c:\> echo ATH0 >COM2 (Dial tone stops - on hook)
Note: echo ATD[type phone without dashes] - this will dial a number
- From Windows HyperTerminal
Start,Programs,Accessories,HyperTerminal
1) choose CompuServer - this will test the outside line
2) or Choose CompuServe, then click on "Cancel". Now type the commands
listed above for DOS.
- From Windows (Modem Diagnostics)
Start, Settings, Control Panel
Modems
General Tab, then click on the Modem you want to test.
Diagnostics Tab, then click on the port to test.
Click, "More Info"
Should show commands ATI1 - ATI7, AT+FCLASS=?. Response should be info or
"OK".

PCMCI Cards
Now make sure the PCMCIA card is listed in one of the slots. If not, the remove,
wait 15 seconds and then reinsert until it is recognized.
Next, run the Windows (Modem Diagnostics above)
Phone Lines
- POTS - Plain Old Telephone Service
PBX - Private Branch Exchange
- Wiring: At the wall w/Release facing up: Yellow|Green|Red|Black
- Male to Male wiring: w/Release facing up (on both ends): Wires cross!
Yellow|Green|Red|Black to Black|Red|Green|Yellow
- Connecting 2 lines at your home.
- Situation: At the home terminal block there is usually room for 4 lines. Line 1
& 2 is connected to the Red & Green set of wires on each block. The wires from
your house is Red/Green/Yellow/Black.
- From your home wire, connect the following:
Line 1: Home-Red to Block-Red and Home-Green to Block-Green.
Line 2: Home-Yellow to Block-Red and the Home-Black to Block-Green.
- Hint: To Remember the above I remember the saying about corel snakes: Red touch Yellow
kills a fellow. Always connect the Red to Yellow for the second line.
